Writing Portfolio: Recovery, Stoicism, and the Work of Staying Sober
In addition to the writing I share on A Stoic Sobriety, I am a Senior Contributor of articles and book reviews at The Sober Curator. I am also a guest on multiple episodes of The Sober Curator Podcast and other podcasts. The Stoics strongly believed in participating in our communities, and I truly enjoy being part of the recovery community.
My goal is to share my experience, strength, and hope as broadly as I can. Working with other people in the online community is a great way to spread the word. I want to share with you on this page some of the work I have done with other folks over the past couple of years.

Books That Sat With Me
The Varieties of Religious Experience William James
Check out the review of this classic exploration of religious and spiritual varieties. A Bill W favorite.
Trainspotting Irvine Welsh
Check out my review of one of my favorite books (and movies) on addiction ever! Irvine Welsh is the master of mixing the darkest with the funny.
September Remember Eliot Taintor
One of my favorite fictional accounts of recovery from alcoholism. The central character faces the challenges we all do.
Requiem For A Dream Hubert Selby Jr.
Another favorite of mine. Selby not only addresses addiction straight on, but he also delves into how one may become an addict.
Confessions of an English Opium Eater Thomas De Quincey
Written in 1821 this is one of the first personal accounts of dealing with addiction. A fascinating read.
The Most Human Adam Nimoy
In this review, we explore the journey of healing between a son and his famous father. Addiction issues play a core role throughout the journey.
John Barley-Corn Jack London
An interesting view on addiction before and during Prohibition. London has a unique view on his own drinking and the male imperative to drink.
The Lost Weekend Charles Jackson
My take on a classic addiction literature novel. A man facing the facts of addictions toll on his life.
Martyr! Kaveh Akbar
Do not miss this review. Akbar is a brilliant writer and storyteller. In addition to addiction, this novel delves into what it is to be human.
The Lois Wilson Story William G. Borchert
Here I review the story of the rock behind Bill W. Without Lois, we would not have AA. She also pioneered recovery for the family.
